Greens Foodport

Greens Bayou is a major tributary in the Houston metropolitan region, located primarily in northeastern Harris County. Extending approximately 45 miles, it flows southeast from northern Houston suburbs to the Houston Ship Channel and ultimately connects to Galveston Bay. As part of Houston’s extensive bayou network, Greens Bayou serves as an important stormwater drainage corridor across the region’s flat coastal plain. Its highly urbanized watershed includes industrial facilities, residential neighborhoods, transportation infrastructure, and green spaces. Because of its low elevation and minimal slope, the area is particularly vulnerable to flooding, with stormwater accumulating quickly and draining slowly. Channelization, land development, and detention basins have significantly altered the bayou’s natural hydrology. The Harris County Flood Control District manages flood mitigation projects, while initiatives such as the Greens Bayou Greenway promote recreation, green infrastructure, and ecological restoration.
